"Submerged aquatic herbs; stem elongate, branching, up to 35 cm or more long, spongy, densely clothed in numerous leaves, terminating in an umbel of many scapes, heads emergent above the water surface. Leaves filiform, 4-10 cm long, 0.1-0.4 mm wide, broadening towards the base, semi-translucent with a median nerve, fenestrate. Scapes 7-20 cm high, 0.4 mm in diameter, 5-7-ribbed; sheaths much shorter than the leaves, loose, parallel-sided, obliquely slit. Heads hemispherical to conical, 2.5-4.5 mm wide, pallid, grey or rarely black; involucral bracts shorter than the capitulum width, obovate-oblong, rounded, firm with scarious margins, glabrous, slightly downturned at maturity; floral bracts oblong-cuneate, scarious or firmer, concave, white-papillose on the centre back or infrequently glabrous, acute; receptacle conical to columnar, thinly to densely pilose. Flowers 3-merous, 0.9-1.4 mm long, enclosed within the bracts. Male flowers turbinate or born on a short stipe, the sepals connate and spathe- like to almost free, oblong, concave, usually with some white papillae near the rounded tip; petals enclosed within the calyx; anthers black. Female flowers born on a short stipe, the sepals variable, navicular, usually sparsely white-papillose, deeply concave with a gibbous, thickened and sometimes winged keel, varying to oblanceolate-oblong and ± rounded on the back, median sepals slightly smaller and concave or flat; petals narrowly oblanceolate to almost linear, white-papillose at the tip, sometimes also pilose on the blade, glands poorly developed, apical. Seeds 0.4-0.5 mm long, minutely punctulate-striate, mid-brown but often appearing blackish due to the adherent ovary wall."
